because we should all do our best to waste-less!

… I’m starting by cutting back on packaging in a big way! I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve stayed awake pouring over my numbers, the number of soap boxes sold, the number of body butter jars, and while I’m beyond grateful for each and every sale I couldn’t ignore the little voice in the back of my mind reminding me of how much waste I was contributing to our landfills. This year alone the world will generate 2.6 trillion pounds of garbage, and only 9% of what’s sent away to be recycled ever actually is. :( Fortunately there is something we can all do about this pressing issue: We can choose to waste-less!

Now, when creating and selling delicate, handmade, natural body care products packaging is kind of a big deal, it makes all the difference in the quality, durability and transportability of a product. I’ve spent many long nights trying to figure out how I could implement my waste-less packaging plan without having to compromise the overall quality of these special products. Much to my delight I found a few companies, and made some great connections with people who are just as passionate about this mission, together we’ve come up with some awesome solutions.

Since I can’t eliminate packaging completely at this time (in the case of my body butters etc), I will now be using glass and jars made with 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. All of my shipping boxes, bags, and packaging materials are now made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper, saving tons of Carbon Dioxide each year. I’ll be purchasing exclusively from companies that offer green solutions for all my needs as I’ve made a commitment to give my support (and love) to suppliers that respect the environment, the animals and people that live here.

As for my soap, I’ve ditched the boxes completely! (I mean, they go right into the garbage anyway right?) and I’ve swapped the plastic cellophane wraps for plant cellulose cellophane that is naturally 100% compostable. It feels like traditional plastic but is made from biomass content made from eucalyptus trees, sourced with sustainable forestry principles and are certified biodegradable. They breakdown in about 3 weeks and can literally be planted in your backyard. I know because I’ve tested it. How amazing is that!

UPDATE: I’m currently working with my long-time label supplier to add recycled labels to our products where necessary. It’s taken longer than I’d hoped but they’re definitely on the way. In the meantime I’ll continue to use the labels we’ve grown to love and offer a new option for those of you that wish to keep your orders as “fuss-free” and “waste-less” as possible!
